Golden Rectangle Cutting Board

Our Golden Rectangle board embodies a proportion also known as the golden ratio, golden section, golden mean, or divine proportion. That proportion is a width that is 61% (a little less than 5/8) of the length. The board is composed of a square and a rectangle. The small rectangle has the same proportions as the whole board itself, making it another golden rectangle. But wait, there's more—if you took a square out of the small rectangle, what remained would be another golden rectangle, and so on ad infinitum.

Wikipedia: "Shapes proportioned according to the golden ratio have long been considered aesthetically pleasing in Western cultures, and the golden ratio is still used frequently in art and design, suggesting a natural balance between symmetry and asymmetry. The ancient Pythagoreans, who defined numbers as expressions of ratios (and not as units as is common today), believed that reality is numerical and that the golden ratio expressed an underlying truth about existence."

Ken Goodwin: "Early in my designing process, I decided on 14”x20” as the size for most of my boards. I wanted to keep the width to 14” or less so you could rest one end inside a typical kitchen sink. I made a prototype 14” wide and 24” long and started cutting strips off the end, stopping when it pleased my eye. The length turned out to be 20”. Sometime later I decided to make one board utilizing the time-honored Golden Rectangle, so well known in art and architecture. It’s a bit longer and skinnier than mine, but if you find this shape more aesthetically satisfying, I’ve got just the board for you."
